Garrett’s talent has woven the technical skills of a masterful painter with the dimensional expertise of extraordinary sculpting; and, over the journey, has challenged—and delivered—new creative platforms. Her studio is “alive” with life-size sculptures which display much more than human form; they each tell a story. The materials from which they are wrought each carries a significant message to the observer. They are fanciful, yet profoundly statement designed. Technically crafted, yet sensuously beautiful works. Against a backdrop of art on canvas and board, the genesis of a new expressionism was established by blending these divergent technical styles into what Garrett has named/branded—Flat Sculpture.
The works are instantly recognizable as something here, unto now, never “expressed” in the world of art. A wall of the studio showcases ten of these works, each a visual statement brought to life—and telling a story to its viewer with sculpted depth. A sea of variant colors rise off the art boards in ways which invite the observer to step into each creation. Through each piece, sounds are established, temperatures defined, light presented, and emotions conjured with provocative style. It’s as though Garrett sculpts each work and God paints it. Kevin Kirby
