Karen Garrett – CV

“Remember: no matter where you go, there you are.”

“Karen Garrett (American, b.1966) is regarded as one of the most prominent American sculptors of her generation. She first gained critical recognition for her work in the 1980s; Garrett is well known for her intense, almost spiritual, outdoor and indoor works in which she marries a Modernist sense of pure materiality with a fascination for the manipulation of surreal forms and the perception of space. Garrett, who was born in Oklahoma moved to Houston in the 1980s to study sculpture at the famed Lawndale School where she earned a Masters Degree in sculpture. She first worked on surreal and organic sculptures using fundamental materials such as cardboard, steel, fiberglass, bronze and  wood. Her sculptures extend formal minimalistic precepts through catching the viewer’s attention with natural colors, sensuously textured surfaces, and optical effects of mass, depth and dimension.

Seldom does one meet a five tool player. An artist who can illustrate, sculpt, paint draw and design.

Her contemporaries often admire her terribilità—her ability to instil a sense of awe.

Garrett's artistic versatility is of such a high order that she is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance Woman.
